BALERNO BOWLING CLUB

TIP TOP TEN……..AND FOUR!

It doesn’t seem so long since I was welcoming in the new outdoor bowling season yet by the time my regular reader(s?) see this the season will have ended. Most members have enjoyed this season with the weather being much more favourable than in recent times. Certainly the green has been running faster thanks to the remedial work undertaken last close season. That work will be repeated along with further efforts to level the green and minimise the humps and hollows that made the rinks so tricky this year.
At the time of writing there are still a few Club competitions to be completed especially in the Ladies Section and I will report on them next month. For now, however, I can congratulate

    • Maxie Baigrie for winning the Geddes (4 bowl singles) Trophy. [Maxie and his Pairs partner Alan Brash of Slateford BC followed that up with a stunning series of wins to capture the Slateford Invitation Pairs Trophy.]
    • Mike Haldane for winning the 2 bowl singles competition and then with Jim Wight winning the 2 bowl pairs competition. Well done both!
    • Tom Murray and Brian Ronald for winning the 4 bowl pairs competition. Brian also partnered George O’Reilly to win the Senior 4 bowl pairs.
    • Helen and Kenny Girdler for winning the Mixed Pairs competition once again and
    • Ron Duguid, Paul Begg and Charlie Dalton  for winning the Seniors Triples

I reported last month on some of the Ladies further successes in external competitions. This year the men are sharing the limelight. Firstly I have to praise Robert Douglas, Frank Millan, President Tom McDonald and Derrick Robb for a magnificent effort in winning the Water of Leith Rink Competition.
Their success was then matched by our Senior Team of John Miller (Singles), Ronnie Forfar and Fergie McBeath (Pairs), David Anderson, George O’Reilly and Brian Ronald (Triples) and Frank Millan, Hugh Watt, Charlie Dalton and David Lees [and holiday absentee Paddy Welsh] (Rink) who beat Beechwood BC to win the Water of Leith Seniors Top Ten Competition. Congratulations to them all! [My apologies to any of the aforementioned who may have been pretending to the wider world that they were too young to play in the Seniors competitions!]

I should also thank all our members who played for our teams in the Ladies, Mens and Seniors leagues. On latest available information, I can confirm that none of the male teams finished bottom of their respective leagues nor was any team relegated……. a major achievement! Next month I shall reveal who of our members is known to me as a part time poet! TTFN!
